New News
Ok so I'm not sure if it's because of being so busy or time flew so fast, but it has been a lot longer then we thought since our last blog. So I guess lets do a recap of this year or summer?? As always with every year we participated in operation backpack to give free haircuts to children who may need them. School age kids were able to receive free backpacks filled with school supplies, a physical and a haircut to start the New Year with style @ Operation backpack held by Lee’s Daycare…

Will they listen before it’s too late?
Now, before I come off as some sort of authority figure on high school basketball, let me be the first one to say that I know squat about press breaks, triangle defenses or moving screens.
But, since I happen to be the only sports writer that I know of that has exclusively covered Santa Fe High sports for the past 12-straight years, maybe I do know what I’m talking about when I say that the current Santa Fe boys basketball team has an identity problem.
Who…

MIAMI – The stroke of midnight came and went virtually unnoticed by Marcus Jones last Thursday night.
Just minutes before, the noise created by more than 60,000 frenzied football fans was all but earsplitting.
The Orange Bowl, and the electrifying atmosphere within it, rocked at a fevered pitch as the home team completed a miraculous comeback.
That noise, however, would ultimately pale in comparison to the deafening silence that greeted Jones and his No.17 Louisville Cardinals te…

Santa Fe’s Megan Hough is currently on pace to smash the all-time school record for assists in a single season
By MIKE DAROZA
The ball gently darts up into the air twice, meeting a smashing right-hand kill on the way down, the crowd goes wild.
If you’ve attended any high school volleyball match, you’ve likely witnessed this scene, over and over.
But, if you’re like most people, you remember the kill, and not the set up.
And that’s just fine, according to Santa Fe Lady Raider senior Megan Houg…

The agonizing walk down that long hallway last Saturday night, in some ways, reminded me of the time I was in Lakeland covering the Boys Basketball Florida Finals a few years back.
It was just moments after Santa Fe had lost the state semifinal game to Sebring, and I was among the reporters outside the Raider locker room waiting for a group of players to come out for the post-game press conference.
The Raider locker room, as much I could tell through each opening and closing of the door, was fil…

In a way, it only seemed fitting that the game ended with a running clock.
Because there’s little doubt that most, if not all, of the Santa Fe Raiders basketball players woke up Wednesday morning feeling as if their 70-38, season-ending loss in the Class 4A regional semifinal game against visiting Milton was nothing more than a blur – like a bad dream.
Problem is, it was just another example in a long line of many life lessons this young Santa Fe team has had to endure over a turbulent, yet jubi…

As soon as the final buzzer signaled the end to the emotionally charged district championship basketball game between Santa Fe and Union County, players, coaches, parents and fans rushed the floor.
Heck, even I was on the floor, right in the middle of it all – just like I’ve done many times before.
I’ve seen kids get into pushing matches, parents yelling at the referees and have even watched a thug being led outside in handcuffs because he was, like an idiot, brandishing a cap gun that looked li…

Giant Killers, a Great Bargian
Ask the fans that attended Tuesday night’s Regional Final between the Santa Fe and Jacksonville-Bolles, and they’re likely to tell you they got their money’s worth out of the six-dollar ticket they purchased to get into the game.
If you ask me, they would probably have to take out a second mortgage on the house, rent out the spare bedroom down the hall and lease out the family dog to the nearest junkyard to match the worth of being fortunate enough to watch a game…

TAMPA BOUND
Santa Fe stuns defending Class 3A champions Jacksonville-Bolles and will play in the Florida Finals on Wednesday
By MIKE DAROZA
The little team that could – did.
And by knocking off defending state champ Jacksonville-Bolles 5-3 in the Class 3A Regional Final Tuesday night, the Santa Fe Raider baseball team will now play in the state semifinal at Legends Field in Tampa for the first time in 28 years.
“To be very honest, if someone would have told me before the season that we’d be h…

Sometimes we in the media like to think we have something to do with some of the actions that take place on the playing fields.
Yet, as much I’d like to take credit for anything that takes place in the wake of one of my sports columns, I honestly know better than that.
Last week I questioned the identity of the Santa Fe High boy’s basketball team, since, up to that point, the only consistent consistency they possessed was that they were consistently inconsistent.
Well, I’m still unsure whether a…

Marcus Jones has been playing a certain scene through his mind over and over ever since he was a little kid growing up in the small town of Alachua.
He’s never been to this place before, yet, now that he’s on the verge of getting there, he can practically smell it, feel it, and hear it.
Tonight, however, when Jones and the rest of his Louisville Cardinal teammates spill out of that tunnel and onto the field at the Orange Bowl, he will finally be able to see it.
“It’s like one of…

Gut check time
The entire Santa Fe Lady Raider varsity volleyball team must have awoken Wednesday morning thinking it was all just a bad dream.
Out of bed, stumble over to the bathroom sink and into a long stare at the mirror.
“Nah, it couldn’t be,” they undoubtedly tried to convince themselves with a splash of cold water, rubbing their eyes harder and harder, as if to clear the cobwebs from this almost life-like dream.
Except, it wasn’t a dream.
And as much as they would like to believe it was…

St. Augustine dodges Raider comeback, advances to regional finals
By Mike DaRoza
ST. AUGUSTINE – In spite of that proverbial dagger practically dangling from their heart, the Santa Fe Raiders defiantly marched the length of the football field to bang on the door one last time.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, however, that’s where their dream season would come to an end as St. Augustine’s Jacquez Rickerson intercepted his third pass of the contest to preserve the No.9 Yellow Jackets’ 33-24 win o…

Lasting memory should not be Lakeland
By MIKE DAROZA
When the Titanic was constructed in the early 1900s, it was the single most crowning achievement in the history of modern man.
Yet, nearly 100 years later, what do we remember most about it?
It sank.
Exactly.
But, why is that?
Is it simply a matter of chronological occurrence that makes us remember the most recent event, or because it is the most significant?
If that’s the case, the 2001-’02 Santa Fe Raider boys basketball team will be remem…

Santa Fe kicks undefeated South Sumter out of playoffs
By Mike DaRoza
Call them overachievers; call them lucky. Call them heroes; call them a fluke.
Call them whatever you want, just don’t call them done.
Because their dramatic 24-21 upset of No.3 South Sumter in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals last Friday means the Santa Fe Raiders now advance to the regional semifinals at St. Augustine (10-0) this Friday.
“After so many heartbreaking losses (this season), this team had every chance to gi…

Pritchett steps down
By Mike DaRoza
The Alachua County Today learned late Sunday afternoon that Scott Pritchett has officially resigned from his post as head football coach at Santa Fe High.
Pritchett’s resignation comes after serving the Raiders for seven seasons in that capacity, while posting a 24-48 overall record.
“I think it’s the best thing for the Santa Fe football program,” explained Pritchett, who also operates as a teacher and co-athletic director for the school.
“After 25 years in…
